Walk Alongside
One of Our Neighbors
During Dignity Day
Dignity Day is a one-day event in which mutiple services set up booths to help provide care to the unhoused in Solano.
We need ambassadors to walk one-on-one around the event and get to know our neighbors who are living unhoused and help them navigate to the different service booths.
You don’t need special skills—just compassion, patience, and a willingness to walk alongside someone.
What Other Volunteers Say About Dignity Day
Thanks Dr. Mike so much for helping organize and lead this event. It was truly a pleasure to serve and I heard nothing but good feedback from those that came out to volunteer with me. Isabel Patchin said “I had the most incredible time serving and meeting everyone on Saturday. I cannot thank you enough for being obedient to Christ's leading in your life and for getting our church involved with the event. It was such a blessed time and hope we can be a part of it again in September!” I was personally touched by a man I was able to serve at both the foot washing station and medical tent. He was initially very apprehensive about taking his shoes off due to embarrassment about a fungal infection. However, we were able to convince him that the warm soak would probably feel good and we put a towel over the bucket initially so we didn’t see his feet. Once we got to talking with him though, he opened up and allowed us to wash his feet. He started to tear up when we washed his feet, saying it felt so nice. He teared up again when we gave him a Burger King gift card. He has a lot of negative past experiences with doctors and was initially resistant to go to the medical tent but I encouraged him and he eventually went. He did his intake with one of the students and then teared up for a 3rd time when I said we could refill his pain meds like gabapentin that he had been out of for quite a while. For someone who has not received a lot of kindness from the world, it was such a blessing to be able to serve him and show him some love that day.
Christina K.This past Dignity Day was the first time I have ever volunteered outside of church. It was an amazing experience to be part of something meaningful for people that are less fortunate and in need of help. I ran into one of my old friends from a past job. He knew both myself and Adija since we all worked together over 20 years ago. I recognized him but I wasn't sure he would recognize me since my hair moved from the top of my head to my face. I was in shock that he recognized me and we were able to reconnect. I was thankful to see that he was taking full advantage of the resources that were being provided. He even accepted prayer and a Bible. I was able to spend time with him and we exchanged numbers. I will make it a priority to connect with him and I am thankful that our paths have crossed. I look forward to sharing some of my testimonies with him and listen to him and learn about each others lives these last 20+ years.
Amit SawhneyThe experience as always is a great one! This time we provided mostly education to guests since many who stopped by had received the bivalent booster already. One meaningful interaction I had was a person who was monolingual in Spanish and couldn’t afford a haircut. I accompanied her to get a haircut and she was so happy that one of the people offering the service spoke some Spanish. She left her belongings with me while getting the haircut, and when she came back, she was all in tears of gratitude. It just filled my heart of love since we take many things for granted.
Fatima HernandezBlessings Doctor Mike, my testimony from volunteering and being an ambassador. I met a man who wasn’t ready for COVID, he was living his life how he wanted without really thinking about financial responsibilities. COVID came and unfortunately he lost his job so without any source of income he lost his apartment. Before he knew it, he was living on the streets homeless. God used me to bring encouragement to him. I shared with him my testimony of salvation and how that same God who did all these things for me can do the same for him because God loves him. He started to weep as he was waiting to take a shower. Then the Lord gave me a word for him, and at first I hesitated because I wasn’t sure if it was God or me speaking in my head. I went ahead and spoke it to him and a grin started to appear on his face, he went from weeping to joy within seconds. Praise the Lord! An hour passes by and after he showers we walk to see the other stations outside of the lot. I wanted him to visit the prayer tent so we did. Brother Joseph prayed for him and released the exact same word I gave the man about an hour earlier. Not only was God confirming to the man about what was spoken over him but God was also reaffirming me that I did hear from Him. At the end of the tour I told the man, watch one day you will be the ambassador and guiding a guest along, sharing the love of God. 🙂
Gerry RamirezI went to Dignity Day, and I was volunteering as an ambassador, I was able to walk with a young lady named Jazmine, I took her to the different stations and she couldn’t believe all the resources available to her she kept saying “wow I can’t believe this, you guys are so kind” she was about to leave and I felt led to pray for her, she said it was okay and as I started praying she started crying. I believe that seeds were planted in her that God will continue to nurture. I was so glad to have met her.
Danielle SolanoI came in the morning with the girl that I mentor, Vanessa. We had met the Saturday before Dignity Day to do our study together. We've been going through Philippians. We were reading the first half of chapter two and focusing on the topic of humility. The challenge at the end of our study chapter had to do with washing feet! It was a perfect coincidence and led to Vanessa joining as a last-minute member of my team for Dignity Day! On the morning of the event, we read Philippians 2:1-11 together again and prayed over the event and the people we would meet. You also mentioned the same verses we had been reading in your welcome speech! I just love the way God kept reminding us of His Word and how He orchestrated Vanessa's presence in the event too. She loved being there and being able to serve! We got to wash lots of feet, which was wonderful! I had the honor of receiving a sweet mother and daughter at our tent (Rose and [Naima]). The daughter came once, by herself, and we spent 30 minutes together talking while I washed and massaged her feet. She brought her mother later and I got to wash both of their feet together. The daughter was so kind and eager to serve, she helped me wash her mother's feet.
IsabelAs a first timer volunteering at Dignity Day, I really didn't know what to expect. I awoke early that rainy morning with one prayer in mind: that God's hand would hold back the rain just for the event; God had more in mind for me to pray. As Holy Spirit prompted me to pray, the words, "One. Even just one person who is starving to know you, Lord, would hear and receive the Gospel" were uttered. When I arrived at Dignity Day, I received my instructions along with the other Ambassadors and expected to meet many guests that day. Secretly nervous, I called silently to the Lord who reminded me of my prayer. I patiently waited in line for my first guest and was matched to "B". We proceeded to parade through the various stations. Though I can barely remember the individual booths, the conversions that proceeded for the next several hours are vividly etched in my memory. We immediately found common ground in our similar childhood agrarian experiences and our tenuous religious foundations on which we were raised. He shared effusively about regrettable decisions, family estrangement, and slow decline in the clutches of substances ultimately leading to becoming unhoused. And finally, how he was now at rock bottom with no further down to go. As he shared how he knows there must be more to life and a better future, he described how he had recently "by chance" been approached by a local pastor who gave him a job to do some dry wall work and how he feels like it is "like God might be helping him out." Through this increasingly obvious setup by Holy Spirit, I felt compelled to share the Gospel and the joyous good news it offers. As we spent more than 2 hours conversing about Jesus and God's will that all would come to repentance, "B's" very countenance changed to one of brightness and hope with revelation of what he must let go of, lest it be a roadblock to "God's plan for his life." He shared his hopes, his dreams, his desire to reconcile with his children, and to leave the unintended lifestyle behind. As we approached the County Health Dept table, I felt the need to ask if he needed to be tested... as he asked "how did you know?" I explained, it was just a feeling... he went on to describe months of worry about the possibility of an exposure to HIV but fear to be tested. I encouraged him to pray and then test; he asked me to pray, so I did. After receiving the miraculous "negative" results, with tears in his eyes, he was beaming and said he is even more resolute in changing his life. As we wrapped up the day, he asked to exchange numbers and expressed his resolve to pray, find a church home, and to read God's word. We hugged and parted ways, a new bond between us. I did not do what I, myself, set out to do that day: to efficiently shuttle many people in need through the Dignity Day kiosks. But I was, for a few hours, exactly where and with whom God wanted me. To this day, I cannot say who was blessed more... "B"? Me? But I know that that day, all the angels of heaven were rejoicing for the 1!
Wes WiltseDignity Day with my fiancé was an experience that refreshed both of our hearts. The two of us served the homeless community around Solano County before, but this was the first time we served in conjunction with one another in quite some time. We arrived to the venue for the 2nd half of the day. We were briefly debriefed on our roles, and was shown around to all the incredible stations that the entire operation offered to those in need. Once we were done with our meeting, and i mean as SOON as we were done, a request was made for a male ambassador to guide a young man in. Because this was my first mission of the day, I took a moment from a far while the young man was finishing his registering process to get a gauge on his demeanor, his body language, maybe think of something witty to open up with, breaking the ice. But then i noticed his hair... and i stood perplexed. Before the thought of "this guy looks familiar" could even form in my mind, the lady registering him asks for his name and he says it aloud. I immediately interjected and approached them, this young man was a fellow classmate who we attended the same elementary and middle school. It had been at least 18 years since I had seen him. The embrace between the two of us was a warm one, he still had the same smile that he had as a youngster, that was the best part to witness. We chopped it up about old times, old friends, playing football in the fields, and briefly on where our lives took us while we went station to station. He introduced me to his girlfriend and another buddy of his that he came with, and they welcomed me warmly. I couldn't have set up such a divine meeting myself; my fiancé and i were originally supposed to attend the event early in the morning, and leave during the time that we actually showed up at. We would've definitely missed seeing him had that happened. I was happy that he got to see a familiar face, one that wasn't judgemental during such hard times. God taught me how important it is to simply just show up, and he'll handle the rest.
Marcel WhitesidePlease feel free to edit in any way you would like. There was another gentleman there too, and I don’t recall his name either. It truly was such an amazing blessing to be a part of. Keeping Tami in my prayers constantly. What a blessing it was to watch God‘s Spirit at work. I asked Tami as we walked by the table where you could receive prayer if she would like to do so. She immediately said yes! When we asked her what she wanted prayer for it was for her son. Joseph (the pastor at the table), asked, “what do you personally want prayer for”? She shared about all the challenges in her life, her fears and struggles with drugs. Joseph shared with her how much Jesus loved her and wanted to bring her healing, forgiveness and mercy. He shared that was no need for shame but instead to experience God‘s love for her. Joseph asked if she had ever asked Jesus to be in her life and she said no but yes, she was interested. He then shared how he too struggled with many of the same addictions, and Jesus had freed him. To watch God move in her heart and through the words of Joseph was life giving. God’s Spirit was at work. The joy on her face was something to see as she asked Jesus to forgive her sins and accept His forgiveness, mercy and love. She excitedly accepted a Bible with words of truth and life. Truly, there was a celebration in heaven. John 10:10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Nancy ThompsonGood morning. This was my first time volunteering for Dignity Day and I can say this was such a good thing for me to experience.I grew up in a family where we always helped the less fortunate so it just felt so wholesome to be apart of something like this and I look forward to being apart of the next one.
Derrickka EarnestHey! Dignity Day was such a humbling experience. Mike and Noeta are truly amazing—just real blessings to the community. They pour so much love into what they do, spreading smiles, hope, and support to those who really need it. Big shoutout to all the churches that came together and to every volunteer who showed up with heart. It was beautiful to see everyone united for such a powerful cause. I’m really grateful I got to be a part of it! 💪 💯
Daniel AlanderIn partnership with local churches and community resource groups across Solano County, we had the honor of serving the unhoused population of Vallejo. Together, we provided showers, haircuts, clothing, meals, and access to medical and housing assistance for those in need. Witnessing our community come together to share their time, resources, and compassion was a truly humbling experience. It reminded us to appreciate the small things and reinforced how even the simplest acts of kindness can make a lasting impact. Thank you, Dr. Hester, and your incredible team, for organizing such a meaningful and transformative event. I’m already looking forward to the next Dignity Day.
Samantha AvecillaGood morning, I apologize for the delay in reporting the tremendous blessings in serving with Dignity Day. One young lady who lives in the apartments next to the Solano Dream center walked to see what event was taking place . I now believe the Holy Spirit led her there for a breakthrough. She was immediately drawn to the Prayer Tent. Glory to God! You see she was a Believer in Jesus Christ but was struggling hard with a serious spirit of depression and Suicidal thoughts. God moved in a mighty way and dismantled the demonic battle in her mind. We prayed and declared Gods truth and promises over her life. Glory to God she was set free, and so Grateful! I was also blessed to meet and be friend a young man named Michael who was unhoused . I had the pleasure of walking him around as a Ambassador to insure he was able to receive all the resources provided at Dignity Day. I was touched by an unknown person driving a White car who consistently and unselfishly throughout the day dropped off and picked up the unhoused to insure they were able to participate. Thank you, Dr., Mike for your YES, Surrender and hard work in this Ministry. God Bless.
Shelly SharpI was stationed at the grill with brother Reggie and I was asked to be an ambassador for Manual. As I was escorting him. He shared that he was excited to receive a shower, new socks, and a tent. Manuel stated that he had been homeless for a few years but he looks forward to Dignity Day. I asked him if he knew Jesus and he said yes. I asked him if I could pray for him. He said yes. I asked, what he wanted prayer for? He didn't have a particular request, therefore I led him in a prayer for peace, comfort, safety, provisions and revelation of God as his father. I used, "Psalm 121 King James Version 1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth." I encouraged him to find a Bible based church He was very thankful for the prayer and the gifts and he said that he hopes to be in a home soon, and thanks for all.
Fed McIver"Another Dignity Day, another huge success! What an honor and joy it was to be apart of an event that is focused on serving people that are often overlooked or ignored. I was able to spend an hour with a gentleman as he received services and supplies and learn his story. God clearly was working in his life and the gratitude that he expressed for what he was able to receive that day demonstrated to me that he encountered the love of God that day. God is moving in Vallejo and cares for each person, regardless of their social class! I look forward to serving at the next Dignity Day! Keep Going!"

As a Dignity Day ambassador, I escorted our clients through the various free services provided by our vendors, the sense of appreciation from those we served was truly palpable. While some first-time clients were initially hesitant, they quickly recognized the care and compassion behind our actions. I also had the meaningful honor of assisting at the prayer booth, where I helped introduce several individuals to a relationship with Jesus Christ. Dignity Day provides a vital, nonjudgmental environment for our unhoused clients, and it was a privilege to witness the impact of this ministry firsthand.
